Guard
"Take pictures but don't try to get close to them or pass their gate."

There is much more behind the guy with the colorful uniform standing in front of the Vatican Gate. He is part of the Swiss Guard. The mission is, and has been for 500 years, to protect the Pope and his residence.

The colorful clothes are traditional renaissance uniforms, similar to those worn by the Swiss mercenaries of the 16th century. Don't let those uniforms foul you though. These guys are seriously trained and will protect the Roman Catholic chairman with their lives. So it is safe to assume that you can take pictures, but it is not a good idea to try to get close to them or pass their gate.
